The thing that changed, and why your quote looks different

If a refrigerant repair costs noticeably more than the last one you paid for, there is a specific reason.

Under the federal AIM Act, the EPA capped the global warming potential of refrigerants in new equipment from January 1, 2025. That effectively ended R-410A — the refrigerant in virtually every residential system installed between roughly 2010 and 2024 — in new systems. New equipment now ships with R-454B in ducted systems or R-32 in ductless.

What is trueWhat that means for you
R-410A is still legal to buy and use for servicingYour existing system can be repaired. Nothing is banned or obsolete
New production has stopped and allowances keep shrinkingThe remaining supply is finite, so the price per pound has risen sharply
Around 80 million R-410A systems are still in US homesThey will be serviced for another fifteen to twenty years. You are not stranded
R-410A and R-454B are not interchangeableYou cannot convert a system by swapping refrigerant. It is a different platform

This matters most in one situation: a leak. Refrigerant is not consumed — if it is low, it escaped. Topping up an R-410A system without finding the leak now means paying a much higher price per pound, repeatedly, for refrigerant that will leak out again.

Repair or replace: the arithmetic now

The old rule said replace when a repair exceeds a third of the cost of a new system. It still works as a starting point, but three factors now push harder toward replacement than they did a few years ago.

  1. Age. Past roughly twelve years, a Houston system has done more running hours than the same unit would elsewhere. Something else is usually not far behind.
  2. Refrigerant type. A major refrigerant repair on an R-410A system is money spent on a platform that is winding down.
  3. Whether the compressor is involved. Compressor plus refrigerant recharge is the combination where repair cost starts to approach replacement.

Two or more of those three, and replacement is usually the better arithmetic. One of the three, and repair is usually still right.
